From Analysts to Advocates: Scaling Business Development Across the Entire Organization

At our recent CANA Offsite, we held a session that tore down internal project silos and turned complex capabilities into accessible, understandable value statements. For a company that emphasizes tailored technology integration, we have to translate our services into impact solutions and immediate competitive advantage. Engineers and analysts will naturally talk in their “native tongue”, but sometimes the specialized jargon obscures value. Highly specific and complicated work often makes it harder for a team member to see potential opportunities or articulate value outside their own expertise track.

The CANA breakout session focused on turning our team into effective brand ambassadors. When our people can clearly communicate CANA’s capabilities, both in formal settings and casual interaction, our partners and prospects can immediately recognize where our solutions deliver value. For stakeholders, this eliminates the guesswork, helping them rapidly identify the right capabilities to solve mission-critical challenges. For any growing company, developing this shared translation skill across technical teams breaks down internal barriers and turns every employee into a natural driver of business development, focused on solving real-world problems. This is so important in a rapidly evolving technology landscape where many problems are “new” and solutions still need to be developed.

To support our effort, we asked people to pair up for spontaneous conversations about a CANA service or solution. We provided talking points with hidden needs that each partner had to uncover and then offer a CANA quick pitch solution. At the end of the exercise, subject matter experts explained CANA services and solutions in layman’s terms, offering clarity and depth on some pretty challenging concepts. The session facilitators also provided business development rules of the road: how opportunities flow through our process pipeline; when and why we establish working relationships; and what administrative processes ensure sound and sustainable results.

One of the major goals of the session was to help team members bridge the technical-to-layman gap. It is great to know a platform ingests sub-tier data into sovereign data backbones, but the stakeholder needs to understand it: “It acts like a digital investigator that removes blind spots from your supply chain without forcing you to rent back your own data”. Clear articulation accelerates trust and helps cut through decision paralysis. It was also important to reduce unnecessary stove-piping. Deep technical expertise in a silo creates isolated products. Growth accelerates when team members across every function understand the broader portfolio, whether it is unmanned defense shielding, logistics planning tools, or supply chain resilience. Broad knowledge team members can spot problems to solve, link those to expansion opportunities, and route leads to the right subject-matter expert.

The team is stronger when every person is an advocate. Business development isn’t just for dedicated sales personnel with preset pitches. When everyone can deliver a one-sentence punchline or give an in-the-moment elevator speech about the CANA mission and core offerings, we find opportunities naturally surface from day-to-day interactions, peer networks, and client touchpoints. The business development pipeline expands when we offer mission impact when and where it is needed.
